Ascend Elements Breaks Ground on New $1B EV Battery Recycling Plant

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Massachusetts-based EV battery material recycler Ascend Elements has broken ground on 500,000 square foot EV battery recycling plant in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The plant dubbed Apex 1 will have capacity to produce EV battery material to power more than 250,000 electric vehicles per year. The facility is expected to create around 400 full-time jobs.

The plant will employ patented Hydro-to-Cathode direct precursor synthesis process to manufacture sustainable, engineered battery materials from recycled batteries, which promises less waste and minimal carbon emissions.

The contract for designing and building the plant has been awarded to Turner Construction Company, Kokosing Industrial, and SSOE. Mathew Bierschbach will serve as the project manager. The grading of the 140-acre site is expected to begin this month. SSOE team has already begun detailed design of the project in collaboration with Ascend Elements.

Tom Manahan, Senior Vice President of Turner Construction Company noted that construction of the plant represents the single largest investment in the history of Western Kentucky. It will significantly support economic growth in the region, he added.
