Allen County Seeks Replacement for its Closed Recycling Drop-Off Site

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Allen County Department of Environmental Management announced that it is still seeking a replacement for the recycling drop-off site at Southgate Plaza behind the Kroger in south Fort Wayne, which it had to close in August last year, following the owners expressing his unwillingness to host the recycling trailer at their property.

According to Tom Fox, Director, Department of Environmental Management, it has not been able to find a suitable replacement despite multiple attempts. Firstly, there is a shortage of areas that can accommodate to such kind of a facility. Moreover, it has been extremely challenging to find people who willingly let the property be used as recycling drop-off site. Also, out-of-state corporations and big property management groups, who mostly own such lands, are seen least concerned about recycling programs in general.

The closure of the Southgate location in 2022 and the former Stellhorn Village drop-off site in 2021 has resulted in a dip in collection by nearly 100 fewer tons of materials by the county’s recycling drop-off sites in 2022, as compared with the prior year.

Fox urged residents to ensure that they do their part and recycle, as the process of finding new landfill is difficult and challenging.
