SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Baldwin County, Alabama, has expanded its recycling infrastructure by opening its third Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (ChaRM), making it easier for residents to recycle items that are not accepted through regular curbside collection. County leaders also announced plans to establish three additional centers, aimed at reducing lanfill waste.

The initiative represents a significant step forward for Baldwin County, which has been steadily strengthening its waste management and recycling programs. The expanded recycling network will also support local economic development by creating opportunities in material processing. Furthermore, it will result in improved volumes of recovered materials and reduced landfill disposal costs.

The newly opened CHaRM facility will accept difficult-to-recycle household materials such as batteries, light bulbs, and glass. These items often require specialized handling and are not accepted by curbside recycling bins. Inceidentally, the County had opened a materials recovery facility last year with a processing capacity of approximately 40,000 tons a year.

According to Baldwin County Solid Waste Disposal Authority CEO Terri Graham, the long-term objective is to make recycling a priority across the county by providing practical and accessible solutions that encourage greater public participation.
