$35 Million Recycling Hub Proposed in Detroit

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): WM- the country’s leading waste management company announced plans to expand its Michigan footprints by setting up a new recycling hub in Detroit at an investment of $35 million. The company is yet to finalize the location for the facility.

The new facility will act as a recycling hub for WM’s other facilities located in Michigan. WM has already received a grant of $465,000 from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy. The hub facility will receive recycled materials from residential, industrial and commercial customers and will have a processing capacity of up to 40 tons per hour.

The state-of-the-art recycling facility, scheduled to open in 2024, is expected to drive economic growth in the region, in addition to creating career opportunities for Detroiters.

Aaron Johnson, Great Lakes Area Vice President, WM noted that there is an urgent need to increase the recycling processing capacity in Detroit. A good majority of recycling end up in trash, as only one-fifth of Detroiters are enrolled in curbside recycling pickup. The new facility will play a key role in increasing the recycling participation rates in the City, he added.

It must be noted that WM is responsible for approximately 60% of the total collection of City’s trash, recycling and yard waste.
