Utah Waste Management Reported Significant Progress in Recycling

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): According to Waste Management of Utah, the state has reported significant progress in recycling.

Mark Snedecor, Director of recycling operations, Waste Management noted that the residue rates, which is a measurement of the volume of materials that don’t get recycled, run in the mid-teens. However, he refused to mention the residue rate for the state.

Waste Management in Utah recycles a wide range of materials including cardboard, paper, aluminum, and plastic. Snecedor reminded residents that caps can be placed back on bottles before they are placed in bins. He urged Utah residents to clean out single-material food containers prior to placing them in bins, as unclean materials could not be recycled and are sent to landfills.

In addition, Momentum Recycling provides glass recycling services in the state. Separate bins are provided for disposing of glass materials.

The materials that are not recycled include mixed-material containers such as coffee cups, due to the presence of different materials including paper and plastic in them. Instead, people are urged to use reusable cup. Also, people should note that recyclables should not be sealed in bags, when they are placed for recycling. In order to ensure effective recycling of materials, people should always check with the municipality for what items could be placed in recycling bins, Snecedor added.
