Recipients will use the funds to create, test, and demonstrate a method that will allow for the safe transportation of used, damaged, or recycled EV batteries. Additionally, it will be utilized to create a machine learning-based semi-automatic method for disassembling EV batteries that have reached the end of their useful lives. In order to properly disassemble and shred end-of-life EV batteries, the other projects include installing small mobile preprocessing centers at collection stations and putting in place an automated sorting and de-hazarding system.
Over the past several years, there has been a huge increase in demand for EVs. Since the Biden-Harris administration took office in 2021, the nation has sold over four million electric vehicles. The market for used EV batteries is expected to expand significantly as a result of the predicted increase in demand for EVs.
B2U Storage Solutions, Inc., General Motors, Caterpillar Inc., ReJoule Incorporated, Rochester Institute of Technology, Siemens Corporation, Tennessee Technological University, and the University of Akron are the beneficiaries of the funding.
