The People’s Depot in Oregon Announced Major Expansion Plans

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): As part of its expansion goals, Portland, Oregon's People's Depot container redemption and job training facility announced intentions to move to a permanent location. For a number of years, it has been functioning in an outdoor area under a bridge.

The new law that Oregon Governor Tina Kotek signed, which permits the establishment of a new kind of beverage container redemption center in the state, is also credited with the action. According to the bill, canners, or those "who redeem empty beverage containers on a daily or near-daily basis," will be the target audience for these new websites.

The People's Depot anticipates doubling its capacity in the new location because it has outgrown its current one. Nearly a mile separates the current facility from the proposed replacement one, which will offer far better working conditions. It also intends to bring on a number of new staff members.

Large local shops, such as grocery stores, will be held accountable for partially supporting the depot's operations, therefore the move will help The People's Depot. Grants from the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative currently support The People's Depot.

In 2024, the People's Depot processed around 9.5 million containers. This year, it intends to boost the processing volume to a minimum of 10 million containers.
