The Shelby Township Solid Waste and Recycling Committee and GFL Environmental will host the popular electronics recycling collection from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 8 at River Bends Park.
The collection is made possible as part of the township’s waste hauling contract with GFL Environmental, so it is open only to Shelby Township residents serviced by GFL Environmental.
“Electronics recycling is a big part of our program with GFL Environmental,” said Township Trustee Lucia Di Cicco, who serves on the Solid Waste and Recycling Committee. “It helps our residents safely and securely dispose of items like computers, TVs and other appliances. We always have a tremendous turnout for this event, and it’s great to see our community take advantage of this service.”
Long lines with no fewer than 100 cars are common for this popular event, which is why the committee recommends attending after 11 a.m. to reduce the wait.
Shelby Township Supervisor Rick Stathakis said because of CiCicco and her recycling committee, in 2021 they served 895 cars and kept 68,420 pounds of electronics out of landfills.
Accepted items include: all televisions, monitors, computers, laptops, printers, fax machines, copier combos, VCRs, keyboards and mice, DVD and CD players, microwaves, stereos, speakers, miscellaneous cables, computer parts, telephones, cell phones, game consoles, handheld electronics, vacuums, small appliances, and holiday lights.
GFL will not accept hazardous waste or batteries. However, residents can recycle those items at the household hazardous waste collection on April 29, 2023.
Shelby Township’s Electronics Recycling Collection event is at 5700 22 Mile Road. Recyclers must enter the park from its 22 Mile Road entrance.
