Santa Monica Launched Ridwell Residential Pickup Service

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The city of Santa Monica announced launch of Ridwell- a residential pickup service for its residents this Tuesday. The service targets items that are hard to recycle, which are normally not accepted for recycling through the city’s blue bin recycling system.

The subscription pickup service charges the customers anywhere between $14 and $18 per month. It offers reusable canvas bags, on which the name of items that can be dropped off is clearly written and metal bin to store them. The items are picked up every other week and sent to partner companies for proper handling.

The municipal recycling program does not accept all types of plastics. The batteries and light bulbs collected through the curbside program need to be sent to hazardous materials facilities. However, the Ridwell service enables to recycle and reuse hard-to-recycle items such as plastic film and multi-layer plastic fast food bags. It even accepts items like eyeglasses and bike tires.

Ridwell, launched in Seattle in 2018, now has approximately 75,000 happy customers spread across eight U.S. cities. It has prevented more than 15 million pounds of trash from ending up in landfills.
