Rapid City Receives $5M EPA Grant for Landfill Upgrades and Expanded Recycling

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Monday saw a surge of residents at the local landfill, clearing tree debris left by a historic windstorm. Rapid city is set to improve landfill operations and recycling services, thanks to a nearly $5 million Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SWIFR grant.

The funds will support upgrades to landfill capacity, reduce recycling costs, and replace outdated equipment. “The grant also includes community education on better recycling practices,” said Mike Theis, city public works director.

Plans include a new commercial recycling program, expanding services to larger businesses and apartment buildings. The initiative aims to double recycling rates and improve material quality.

The grant follows a recent residential waste service rate increase of $3.45 per month, approved by the city council. Theis noted that rate adjustments were necessary due to rising landfill wages and the higher-than-expected cost of developing Landfill Cell 15, which became operational late last year after a seven-month construction period.

Looking ahead, the city is considering landfill expansion on adjacent land to accommodate future waste management needs, aligning with long-term efficiency and sustainability goals.
