Race to Zero Waste: UNCW Taking Part in Electronics Drive for National Competition

RIDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2021 - UNCW Recycling is collecting electronics for “Campus Race to Zero Waste,” a national recycling competition. The event helps advance recycling and waste diversion efforts across campuses in the U.S. and Canada.

Many older electronics contain dangerous elements that need to be kept out of landfills and waterways. From Feb. 26 to March 27, unneeded electronics can be dropped off at the campus recycling facility during business hours. In addition, three Saturday drop off sessions are being held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the following locations (campus map):

March 6: Parking lot at the UNCW Center for Marine Science
March 13: D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy
March 27: UNCW Public Depot

Feletia Lee ’16, recycling coordinator, is organizing this year’s effort. “We have one month to collect more than any other school. Last year, even in the midst of COVID-19, we collected 7,555 pounds of material putting us in 14th place. This year’s goal is to collect 15,000 pounds.”

Lee ensures all collection efforts will be conducted following the “3Ws.” For details, see uncw.edu/warehouse/recycling.
