SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) has issued new violation notices to Carbon Limestone Landfill in Poland Township. The latest findings relate to stormwater management practices and follow earlier incidents involving leachate spills.

According to the agency, the landfill had previously been cited after leachate escaped into an on-site pond connected to nearby state waters. Investigators linked the releases to a slope failure within the landfill. A separate incident during May had resulted in overflow of approximately 61,000 gallons of wastewater from a leachate storage tank.

The failure of soil barriers designed to contain leachate, due to a heavy rainfall event in early July resulted in an estimated 15,000 gallons of the liquid entering a stormwater pond. According to officials, this spill remained within the facility and did not reach surrounding waterways.

The regulators have now identified an additional compliance issue, stating that the landfill failed to perform required quarterly visual inspections of stormwater discharge points.

Republic Services has until August 30 to submit documentation outlining corrective measures. The company said it has already begun remediation efforts and is working closely with regulators to prevent similar incidents in the future.
