Manistee County Recycling Recorded Notable Surge in 2023


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Manistee County recorded significant increase in recycling volumes during the previous year. The 2023 recycling surged higher by more than 10,000 pounds upon comparison with 2022.

The report is based on recycling volumes reported at 8 participating PA69 municipalities- Arcadia, Bear Lake, Brown, Cleon, Dickson, Maple Grove, Onekama and Pleasanton townships. 

According to the report prepared by Bay Area Recycling for Community, a total of 564,600 pounds of recyclable material was collected at eight sites during the previous year. This compares with collection of 422,727 pounds in 2021 and 427,440 pounds in 2022, said Karla Smith-Kasten, the county’s recycling coordinator. Upon comparison with 2022, the recycling volumes were up by roughly 4% or 137,160 pounds.

The month of August recorded highest recycling volume in 2023 of 72,000 pounds, whereas the lowest volume of 30,600 pounds was recorded in April. By location, Onekama stood first in total recycling volumes with 160,200 pounds, followed by Arcadia with 102,000 pounds. The lowest yearly collection of 25,500 pounds was seen in Dickson.

Smith-Kasten urged non-participating municipalities to enter into the Manistee County PA69 recycling program.
