Kent County Recycling Centre to Shut Down for Upgrades

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Kent County’s Recycling and Education Center located in 977 Wealthy St., Grand Rapids will be closed for a week so as to perform upgrades to the facility.

According to announcement made by the Kent County Department of Public Works (DPW), the solid waste facility will not process recyclable materials during the period from 24th to 31st October, 2023. During the closure, the recyclables will be sent to the Waste to Energy (WTE) facility.

Michigan's New Rules Make Recycling a Priority

The press release urged residents to hold on to recyclable materials during the closure, if possible and bring them to the facility when it reopens after the upgrades. The residential drop-off window will continue to remain open. The materials dropped off during this period will be stored and processed after reopening of the facility.

The Kent County DPW noted that the upgrades include installation of state-of-the-art equipment. The upgrades will ensure that the facility runs in the most efficient manner, thus helping to meet the rising recycling needs of Michigan communities, said Isaac Thaler, resource recovery and recycling manager.

Last week, the DPW had published its Fall 2023 Recycling Guide, as part of efforts to ensure that recyclables do not end up in landfills. Incidentally, the County aims to reduce landfill waste by 90% by end-2030.
