SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Greenfield’s recycling program has gained significant momentum after the city introduced major changes to its collection system. The city collected 128 tons of recyclable material in July 2026, up 10.81 tons from the same month last year.

The latest figure was the highest monthly collection total recorded during the past year. Greenfield collected 1,303.14 tons of recyclables over the 12-month period.

The increase in collection is partly attributed to the move to single-stream recycling, which allows residents to place paper, plastics, cans and other accepted materials together rather than sorting them separately.

Additionally, the city had replaced its smaller 18-gallon containers with 95-gallon carts, that are emptied using automated trucks. City officials say the larger containers give households more room to recycle, while automated collection has reduced the physical workload for employees, allowing them to complete routes more efficiently.

Greenfield also reported a major improvement in recycling quality. July recorded zero days of contaminated recycling. It must be noted that the city had reported a total of 25 contamination days during the previous year.

Officials thanked the community for thier efforts during the transition period. Greater public awareness and easier collection methods have encouraged residents to recycle more, they added.
