SEATTLE (Recycling Monster):The Grand Island City Council has given the green light to a major infrastructure upgrade for the city’s Solid Waste Transfer Station, located at 5050 W. Old Potash Highway.
The Council unanimously approved the lowest construction bid of $7.53 million submitted by RMV Construction of Kearney. In addition, engineering fees estimated at $775,548 were approved by a 10-0 vote, bringing the total project cost close to $8.3 million.
Built in 1981, the existing facility can no longer accommodate the growing waste volumes and vehicle traffic. Over the years, the number of customers using the station has surged from 10,345 in FY 2007 to 28,236 in FY 2017, while the waste tonnage increased from 28,578 to 63,910 tons during the same period.

The new Transfer Station will incorporate several modern safety and efficiency features, including taller ceilings, improved lighting, and enhanced traffic flow. The upgraded design will feature six bays instead of four, along with separate inbound and outbound lanes and a new scale house to streamline operations.
Once construction is completed, the existing facility will be repurposed for storage, ensuring continued use of city assets while meeting the growing waste management needs of the community.
