SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): During a meeting yesterday, the Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District (KCSWMD0) talked about the advantages and disadvantages of providing its citizens with tire recycling services.
The notion of the district helping with the subsidized collection of tires for recycling was presented by KCSWMD Executive Director Tom Ganser during the meeting. Following discussions with local tire companies and County Highway Superintendent Steve Moriarty, the proposal was made. He mentioned that the highway agency picks up almost two trailers of used tires off the sides of roads each year. Additionally, between 500 and 2,000 clients buy new tires each month.
According to Ganser, the highway department's annual collection of waste tires and the insufficient number of workers available for a tire collection event are the main reasons for the priority for tire recycling services. "Reducing the volume into the landfill is the board's ultimate goal," Ganser continued.
Other options that were considered at the meeting included quarterly tire collection and KCSWMD funding huge trash and recycling containers for small towns annually.
