South Haven Recycle Roundup Returns With Free Drop-Off for HHW and More
MONTREAL (RecyclingMonster): A free community recycling event will be held in South Haven on Saturday.
The city works with the Van Buren Conservation District to hold the Recycle Roundup each year, and the district’s Kalli Marshall said the event accepts a wide variety of items that can be disposed of safely by partnering vendors. The program reflects the kind of local recycling access highlighted across the RecyclingMonster recycling platform.
What Residents Can Bring
Marshall said the event will collect household hazardous waste, including old cleaners, pesticides, light bulbs, batteries, Styrofoam, electronics and tires.
The Recycle Roundup will be this Saturday, August 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South Haven Department of Public Works building at 1199 8th Avenue. It is open to all Van Buren County residents.
Drive-Thru Format and Community Funding
Marshall said last year’s event attracted around 250 vehicles. The drop-offs are handled drive-thru style, so residents do not have to get out of their cars.
She also said the program is paid for with the conservation district millage and helps protect the environment in Van Buren County.
Last Year’s Collection Totals
Marshall said last year’s recycling event collected 300 pounds of foam, 782 tires, just under 3,000 pounds of electronics, 3,360 pounds of hazardous waste and 2,300 gallons of oil-based paint.
Those totals show the scale of material that can be diverted through a single community collection event.
Accepted and Not Accepted Items
During the event, accepted items will include household hazardous waste such as cleaning products, batteries, antifreeze, solvents, aerosol cans, fluorescent bulbs, mercury and medications. Also accepted are oil-based paint, paint thinners, aerosol paint, electronics, foam packaging, passenger tires, small quantities of lawn and garden chemicals, sharps and select items such as U.S. flags, hearing aids, eyeglasses and canes.
Passenger tires are accepted with or without rims, with a limit of 10 tires per household.
The following items will not be accepted: motor oil, latex paint, ammunition or explosives, asbestos, radioactive waste and 55-gallon barrels.
