SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Pittsburgh has announced a series of special collection events to help residents safely dispose of hard-to-recycle items during the spring cleaning season. The first event is scheduled for March 21, running from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pittsburgh Environmental Services.
The initiative allows residents to drop off items that cannot be handled through regular waste collection, including electronics, chemicals, paints, batteries, and propane cylinders. Additional events will be held at Hazelwood Green in May, Carnegie Mellon University in July, and Brookline Rec Center in September.
City officials noted that pre-registration is mandatory to streamline traffic and reduce wait times. While disposal of computers and laptops is free, fees apply to other materials, calculated per pound depending on the item type. Payments are accepted only via credit or debit cards.
Strict safety guidelines will be enforced, including proper labeling and sealing of chemicals and size limits on containers, officials noted. The program aims to ensure safe handling of hazardous waste while promoting environmental responsibility and protecting public health across the city.
