OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) - The popularity of frying Thanksgiving turkeys has risen in recent years, and that requires a substantial amount of oil.
Ocala city workers say you can hand it off to them to be recycled instead of pouring it down the drain.
The city held a cooking oil recycling day Monday to help keep the grease out of the city's pipes.
Officials say that fats, oils, and grease can have a nasty impact on a home's pipes.
"These fats, oils, and grease are going to collection on the sides of pipes and constrict it to the point where it's eventually going to back up in your house or potentially cause that pipe to have an explosion, an eruption, to burst, so it's important to remove those fats, oils, and grease from getting into your drain," said Conservation Coordinator with Ocala's Water Resources Department, Rachel Slocumb.
If you weren't able to drop off your cooking oil Monday, officials say to put the oil in a sealed container and put it in the garbage.
You can also call the Water Resources Department at 352-351-6774 to set up a time to drop off used cooking oil.
