Ameresco and Republic Services Launch RNG Facility at Upper Rock Island Landfill in Illinois

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Ameresco, Inc. and Republic Services, Inc. have placed a new renewable natural gas (RNG) facility into commercial operation at the Upper Rock Island County Landfill in East Moline, Illinois, strengthening their long-running clean energy partnership. The Ameresco-owned project upgrades landfill gas (LFG) into pipeline-quality RNG that can be used as a low-carbon transportation fuel and for other energy applications.

The 5.2 MWe RNG facility is engineered to capture and process nearly 2,000 standard cubic feet per minute of raw landfill gas, producing more than 500,000 dekatherms of renewable natural gas annually. By converting waste emissions into a usable energy resource, the project is expected to avoid more than 27,000 metric tons of CO? emissions each year, an environmental benefit comparable to the carbon sequestration of 326,000 acres of forest.

The project supports decarbonization, enhances air quality, and delivers value to local communities. It marks the 16th RNG project jointly developed by Ameresco and Republic Services and follows Illinois RNG facility announcement made in July 2025. The initiative also aligns with Illinois clean energy targets and Republic Services’ goal to expand beneficial biogas reuse by 2030.
