Alterra Withdraws Proposal to Build Chemical Recycling Plant in Pennsylvania

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Alterra Energy announced that it has withdrawn plans to build a chemical recycling plant in Sugarloaf, Pennsylvania.

The recycling facility would have been the company’s second, after its already operational chemical recycling facility in Akron, Ohio. Originally, the plant was supposed to be operational by October 2028. It must be noted that the proposed facility had faced strong local opposition.

The proposed plant would have processed up to nearly 190 pounds of plastics per year and converted them into synthetic oil, which in turn would be used in manufacture of new useful products.

A letter to the Sugarloaf Township Board of Supervisors stated that the landowner's choice to sell the property to a data centre developer was the reason for the proposal's withdrawal. Alterra had anticipated leasing the property. Alterra's decision to abandon the plan was also significantly influenced by the vehement opposition from the neighbourhood and environmental organisations.

According to the corporation, it will keep an eye out for land options in the surrounding area to establish the factory.

Environmental organisations like Save Our Susquehanna, Luzerne County Community Action Coalition, and Beyond Plastics applauded Alterra Energy's  decision to leave the proposed site.
