MONTREAL (RecyclingMonster): The Town of Swampscott will shift to fully automated trash collection under a new five-year contract with Republic Services, a move officials say is designed to improve efficiency, worker safety, and long-term cost sustainability.
New Contract Begins July 1
Town Administrator Nick Connors said the new contract will take effect on July 1, following discussions during a recent Solid Waste Advisory Committee meeting. Automated trash collection is expected to begin immediately, while the new recycling system could be delayed by up to one month.
Standardized Carts to Support Automation
Under the updated system, residents will use standardized carts designed for automated collection trucks. Each eligible household will receive a 35-gallon trash cart and a 95-gallon recycling cart.
The transition is intended to streamline operations while aligning collection equipment with the town’s long-term solid waste strategy.

Automation Seen as a Cost-Saving Move
According to Connors, automation became the more financially sustainable option for the town. He noted that maintaining manual collection would have raised annual costs by roughly $475,000 to $480,000.
Weekly Service to Continue
Residents will continue to receive weekly trash and recycling pickup under the new system. Yard waste collection will also remain in place for seven weeks each year.
Public Forum Planned for Residents
Town officials will hold a public information forum on June 15 at the local high school to help residents prepare for the change. The session is expected to include a presentation as well as a question-and-answer segment.
