SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Around 180 high school students from across Hanoi successfully collected and sorted nearly eight tonnes of waste paper, used bottles and clothing, during the 12th edition of the annual “Luom Day” recycling event held over the weekend at Tay Son Elementary School.
The initiative is part of the Striped Project, an environmental awareness campaign founded in 2015 by a group of Hanoi students. The project aims to encourage waste sorting, recycling, and sustainable living practices among young people while supporting charitable causes.

The volunteers of the event are responsible for sorting and processing the recyclable materials collected during the event. The recycled products made from the collected materials will be sold at a fair. Meanwhile, non-recyclable waste will be disposed of responsibly. The funds generated through the event will be utililized to support charitable activities and educational programs.
The organizers of the event expect this year’s waste paper collection to surpass last year’s total. The proceeds from this year’s event are expected to reach between VND20 million and VND30 million (US$759–1,139). The funds will be used to purchase rice and other essential supplies for a school in a mountainous region. The recycled products will be donated to school children.
