SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): USA Waste of California, a subsidiary of WM, is preparing to expand its Southern California footprint through a planned acquisition of Waste Resources, a California-based waste hauling company, according to municipal records. Although WM has not commented publicly, several cities served by Waste Resources have already approved franchise updates allowing services to transition.
Waste Resources provides residential waste collection and recycling in communities including Glendale, Gardena, and Hawaiian Gardens. The company also offers limited commercial and roll-off services and operates a fleet of about 60 collection vehicles. In addition, it serves Lynwood and holds an exclusive franchise in Carson covering residential, multifamily, commercial, and industrial customers.
If completed, the transaction would enable WM to assume multiple established municipal contracts in a market where it already has a strong presence, including participation in Los Angeles’ RecycLA commercial waste program. City officials have said the deal is partly driven by the upcoming retirement of Waste Resources’ longtime owner, Kosti Shirvanian.
Speaking at a Gardena City Council meeting in mid-January, company representatives said WM’s scale and financial resources could help cities achieve higher recycling and waste diversion rates.
