Grand Forks Recycling Tonnage Surges 93% Since 2011

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Grand Forks has recorded a dramatic rise in recycling activity over the past decade, with total recycling tonnage increasing by 93% since 2011, according to city officials. Data from the Grand Forks Public Works Department shows recycled material volumes climbed from 2,469 tons in 2011 to 4,766 tons in 2025, reflecting steady progress in waste diversion efforts.

Public Works Director Sharon Lipsh attributed the growth to improved tracking systems, higher public awareness, and strict oversight to ensure recyclable materials are not diverted to landfills. She emphasized that all recycling collected within city limits is monitored closely to guarantee proper processing, reinforcing public trust in the system.

Lipsh highlighted the financial benefits of higher recycling rates, noting that landfill development and maintenance involve significant costs, including lining, leachate collection, and groundwater monitoring. The city’s most recent landfill cell, constructed in 2022 at a cost of $6.8 million, remains relatively new, with Grand Forks currently operating the third of 18 planned cells.

While recycling has surged, overall waste generation has also risen. Since 2011, trash volumes increased 19%, agricultural waste jumped 153%, and total landfill tonnage grew 11%.

Overall, city officials say Grand Forks remains well-positioned to manage current landfill and recycling demands.
