SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Kamloops households should prepare for longer waits for garbage and recycling pickups due to three upcoming statutory holidays — Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day — which will shift the city’s solid waste collection schedule.
The City of Kamloops operates on a skip-a-day system, moving collection forward by one day after a statutory holiday. For some neighborhoods, this means the interval between pickups will stretch to 19 days, compared to the usual 14-day cycle. A similar schedule adjustment in 2023 proved manageable, with residents adapting successfully, according to city officials.

To ease pressure on bins during the holiday period, the city recommends maximizing organics carts, which are collected more frequently. Cardboard can also be layered inside these carts to absorb moisture. Excess recyclables, including glass, foam packaging, and flexible plastics, can be taken to Recycle BC depots. Breaking down large cardboard boxes or using designated city depots will help create more space in recycling bins.
Collection schedules are available online, via the free Waste Wise Kamloops app, or at City Hall and the Civic Operations Centre. The app’s Waste Wizard tool provides guidance on the best disposal methods for specific items.
