City of Independence Unveils Upgraded 24/7 Recycling Center

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Independence has officially launched its newly expanded recycling center, signaling a major advancement in the community’s long-term sustainability and waste-reduction goals. The facility opened to the public on November 17, 2025, and is now accessible around the clock, providing residents with continuous recycling convenience. Located at 2395 Jamestown Ave—formerly home to Bower’s Discount—the site will now serve as the centralized hub for all local recycling operations.

City officials highlighted that the upgraded center introduces multiple improvements and expanded services designed to better meet public needs. Among the most noteworthy updates is the addition of glass recycling, addressing a frequently requested option from residents and significantly broadening the scope of materials accepted.

In conjunction with the opening, the City announced a strategic restructuring of existing recycling locations. To streamline operations and improve service efficiency, cardboard drop-off bins at both the Old Pool Site and River’s Edge have been permanently removed. Residents are now required to direct all recyclable materials, including cardboard, to the new Jamestown Avenue facility.

Officials reiterated the importance of proper sorting to ensure smooth processing. Only approved items may be placed in designated containers, and all glass products must be deposited specifically into the marked glass-collection dumpster.

City Manager Matthew R. Schmitz described the expansion as an exciting milestone for the community, emphasizing that the partnership with Kluesner Sanitation enables a more comprehensive and centralized recycling solution. Schmitz noted that the improved facility will simplify recycling participation, increase diversion of waste from local landfills, and contribute meaningfully to a more environmentally responsible future.

“This is a fantastic development for our residents,” Schmitz said. “By bringing services together at a single location, we are enhancing convenience and reinforcing our commitment to preserving our environment for generations to come.”

The City encourages all residents to begin using the Jamestown Avenue center immediately and to stay informed about accepted materials and proper disposal guidelines.
