Mount Vernon Fall Clean Up Day Set for Oct. 17
Knox County residents can dispose of eligible unwanted household items during the four-hour event, but organizers warn that collection could close early if available dumpsters reach capacity.
MONTREAL (RecyclingMonster): Residents of Knox County, Ohio, will have an opportunity to dispose of unwanted household items during Mount Vernon's 2026 Fall Clean Up Day on Saturday, October 17.
The event, jointly organized by the City of Mount Vernon and Knox County Recycling and Litter Prevention, will run from 8 a.m. to noon at Ariel-Foundation Park in front of the Schnormeier Events Center. Operations may end earlier if the available dumpsters reach capacity.
Unlimited Loads Accepted for $20 Each
Residents may bring unlimited eligible loads at a charge of $20 per load. Payment will be accepted by cash, check or credit card.
Checks must be made payable to the City of Mount Vernon with “Fall Clean Up” written in the memo line.
Residents Must Unload Their Own Materials
All materials must be unloaded by hand. Trailers and mechanical dumping are not permitted, and participants are responsible for unloading their own vehicles.
Residents are advised to bring protective equipment such as gloves and eye protection. Volunteers will be available to direct traffic and provide general assistance.
Hazardous Waste, Tires and Construction Debris Excluded
Prohibited materials include toxic waste, asbestos, lead-acid batteries, biohazardous waste and appliances containing Freon or chlorofluorocarbons.
The event will also not accept tires, used oil, auto parts, steel drums, yard waste, construction materials, ashes or liquids.
Noon Is the Scheduled Closing Time. Capacity May Be the Real Deadline.
The takeaway: Residents should treat this as an early-morning event. During Mount Vernon's spring clean-up, every available dumpster was full by 9:30 a.m., well before the scheduled noon closing.
Why demand is worth watchingMount Vernon's clean-up program now serves a larger audience than it did historically. The city says earlier clean-ups were limited to Mount Vernon residents, while its partnership with Knox County Recycling and Litter Prevention expanded the program countywide beginning in 2025.
That means the advertised four-hour window does not necessarily represent four hours of available capacity. For residents with bulky household material, arriving early and checking the prohibited-item list before loading a vehicle could determine whether the trip is successful.
One important distinctionFall Clean Up Day is primarily a disposal and community clean-up event. The city does not state that materials placed in the dumpsters will be recycled, so residents looking to recycle excluded materials such as tires, automotive items or other specialized waste may need a separate approved outlet.
Organizers are encouraging residents to arrive early because the event will close at noon or when dumpster capacity is reached, whichever occurs first.
