SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Philadelphia officials laid out plans for where to send Philadelphia’s waste, with a new contract on the table that would burn less trash than before. During a news conference, Managing Director Carlton Williams shared new details of a plan that will now head to City Council amid growing debate over the city’s waste disposal strategy.
Councilmember Mark Squilla said he will introduce the “Zero Waste Circular Economy Act” on Thursday, which outlines a long-term plan to move away from landfills and incineration. “The plan sets goals for achieving a 60 percent overall waste diversion rate.”
One of the main questions surrounding the city’s solid waste contract is how much waste would be sent to the company’s incinerator in Chester, Pennsylvania, and whether City Council will approve the agreement. The city collects more than 600,000 tons of trash each year, and deciding where that waste ends up has become the subject of growing debate.
