RHINEBECK, N.Y. — Dutchess County’s next household hazardous waste disposal and electronics recycling event will take place Saturday, Sept. 19, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the county fairgrounds, 6636 U.S. Route 9.
Registration, which is limited to Dutchess County residents, has begun for the event. There is a fee of $10 per household and space is limited to the first 400 registrations. Visit dutchessny.gov/Departments/Solid-Waste-Management/Household-Hazardous-Waste-Electronics-Event.htm to register.
People can also register and pay by check by calling (845) 486-2841. Checks should be made payable to “Dutchess County Commissioner of Finance” and mailed to or dropped off at the Dutchess County Division of Solid Waste Management at 96 Sand Dock Road, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. 12601.
“These Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling events offer our community an easy, safe way to clear out unwanted items while protecting the environment,” Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino said in a press release. “This is a great opportunity to get rid of some clutter while helping ensure these materials and equipment are handled and disposed of responsibly.”
Registered residents should plan for wait times upon arrival at the event, particularly if arriving when the event first opens at 8 a.m.
Accepted items include television sets, computer monitors, telephones, pesticides and pool chemicals. Other items that will be accepted include lead-based paints (no latex or oil-based paints), stains, varnishes, photo chemicals, non-latex driveway sealer, creosote, kerosene, flammable liquids, metal polish, turpentine, strippers, thinners, and gasoline/oil mixture. Brake fluid, antifreeze, herbicides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers, adhesives, resins, solvents, fluorescent tubes (tape together or put in a box to prevent breakage), propane tanks, mercury-containing devices, CPU’s, fax machines, printers, stereos, and lithium and sealed lead acid batteries (but not automotive) will also be accepted.
Hazardous waste in containers larger than 10 gallons will not be accepted. Other items that will not be accepted include ammunition or explosives, asbestos products, latex driveway sealer, building or construction debris, tires, furniture, medical waste, pharmaceuticals, air conditioners, radioactive materials, scrap metal, metal drums or empty containers, motor oil, car batteries, and alkaline or rechargeable batteries.
