Garrett County Expands Paint Recycling Program Through PaintCare Partnership

Garrett County Launches Paint Recycling Program with PaintCare

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Garrett County Solid Waste & Recycling has partnered with PaintCare and Naylor’s Ace Hardware to launch a new paint recycling program. The initiative offers residents a convenient and environmentally responsible way to dispose of leftover paint, while helping Maryland divert reusable materials from landfills.

The new program strengthens local recycling accessibility and aligns with broader sustainability efforts highlighted across the RecyclingMonster platform.

Program Details and Accepted Materials

Under the program, Naylor’s Ace Hardware will serve as a community drop-off site. It will accept latex and oil-based architectural paint, stains, sealers, and varnishes.

Items must be delivered in their original containers with the manufacturer's label intact. Aerosol coatings are not accepted. Customers may recycle up to five gallons of paint per visit.

Partnership Strengthens Local Recycling Efforts

According to Kimberly Madigan, Recycling Coordinator for Garrett County Solid Waste & Recycling, the partnership is expected to strengthen local recycling efforts through close collaboration with Naylor’s Ace Hardware and its staff.

Free Recycling Supported by PaintCare Fee

Residents can recycle unwanted paint free of charge. Program costs are covered through the PaintCare fee, which is added to the purchase price of new paint in Maryland.

Statewide Impact Under Paint Stewardship Law

Maryland’s paint stewardship law, which came into effect in 2024, requires paint manufacturers, retailers, consumers, and government agencies to work together to reduce paint waste through reuse and recycling.

PaintCare currently operates more than 100 drop-off locations across Maryland.

Market Relevance

The program reflects growing statewide efforts to expand recycling infrastructure and improve material recovery, supporting both environmental goals and responsible waste management practices.
