Maryland Extends Battery Safety Commission to Address Fire Risks

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Maryland lawmakers have approved legislation to revive the state’s Commission to Advance Lithium-Ion Battery Safety. The move will extend efforts to address fire risks and recycling challenges posed by the growing stream of lithium-ion batteries.

The decision reestablishes the 20-member commission after its original mandate expired at the end of 2025. First formed in 2024, the panel previously recommended adopting extended producer responsibility (EPR) laws, expanding battery recycling infrastructure, and improving support for first responders, recycling facilities, and municipalities.

The commission’s renewed focus will include examining insurance challenges facing recycling operators, regulatory impacts on battery collection and recycling, and transportation safety concerns involving roads, tunnels, rail systems, and the Port of Baltimore.

The panel also recommended updating Maryland’s electronics recycling laws to better address devices with embedded batteries and urged material recovery facilities to adopt advanced battery detection technology.

As part of expansion of its work, additional members from the insurance sector, towing industry, and the Maryland Port Administration will join the commission.

The commission is expected to reconvene this fall and is required to submit an interim report by December 1, with final recommendations due to the governor and legislature by December 2027.
