Greenfield to Roll Out Automated Recycling Carts Under New EPA-Funded Program

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Greenfield is set to roll out new wheeled recycling carts in the coming weeks as part of a major upgrade to its waste management system. Funded by a $2.06 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the initiative introduces an automated, single-stream recycling program designed to improve efficiency and worker safety.

According to city officials, all eligible households will automatically receive the new carts, with deliveries scheduled over the next two weeks by the Department of Public Works. Residents are not required to take any action to receive the carts and may keep their existing 18-gallon bins for indoor storage or transport purposes.

The automated system will use specialized trucks to lift and empty carts, significantly reducing manual handling. Mayor Ginny Desorgher said the transition marks a major step forward in protecting sanitation workers while simplifying recycling for residents.

Implementation will follow a staggered schedule based on collection routes, with residents advised to ensure proper cart placement and clearance for pickup. Additional cart requests may incur a fee, though final pricing is yet to be confirmed.
