Juneau Recycling Center Reopens at Full Capacity After Repairs

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The city of Juneau has announced the full reopening of its recycling center after months of intermittent closures and reduced services caused by mechanical failures. Beginning Tuesday, the facility will resume normal operations and regular hours, restoring a vital service relied upon by local residents.

City recycling manager Stuart Ashton expressed appreciation for public patience during the disruption, noting that the center has long been a cornerstone of waste management in the community. The facility faced significant challenges after back-to-back record snowstorms in late December damaged critical equipment, particularly the baler. This machine plays a key role by compressing recyclable materials into compact blocks for shipment to processing facilities in Seattle.

During repairs, residents were asked to store recyclables temporarily as crews worked to restore functionality. With the baler now fully operational, the center will again accept materials including plastics No. 1 and No. 2, glass, metals, paper, and cardboard.

Operated in partnership with Waste Management, the facility is essential to reducing landfill use and supporting long-term sustainability efforts.

The City plans to have more oversight on the facility.
