SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Recycle Utah is preparing to relocate after operating for 35 years out of Park City’s old bus barn, as growing demand and space constraints push the nonprofit recycling center toward a larger, more centralized facility in Summit County.
Currently situated on just 0.4 acres, the center serves more than 400 vehicles daily, often causing traffic backups along the block. Education Director Chelsea Hafer said the limited footprint has made it increasingly difficult to manage operations at the scale the organization has reached. Executive Director Andy Hecht added that the cramped site no longer supports the center’s long-term goals.
In partnership with Park City Municipal and Summit County, officials identified a four-acre parcel near Home Depot and adjacent to High Valley Transit. Mayor Ryan Dickey said the new location will be more accessible for county residents and is expected to improve waste diversion rates by making recycling more convenient.
However, with the current lease ending in August, Recycle Utah faces a timing gap before the new facility is completed. Leaders are considering a temporary structure on the new site to maintain operations. The nonprofit plans to launch a capital campaign to fund most of the project.
