SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Illinois has kicked off a new paint recycling initiative aimed at helping residents and businesses responsibly dispose of leftover paint, stains, and varnishes. The program, which began December 1, is managed by PaintCare, a nonprofit formed by paint manufacturers under the American Coatings Association (ACA).
The program features a growing network of more than 250 convenient drop-off locations, including paint and hardware retailers as well as local government facilities. “This initiative provides year-round, easy options for recycling leftover paint,” said Michael W. Johnson, CEO of the ACA. “It reflects the coatings industry’s dedication to sustainable solutions that benefit both communities and the environment.”

Illinois Program Manager Ross Dudzik emphasized the crucial role of local partners in supporting the program and expanding access. Under the state’s paint stewardship law, manufacturers are required to implement environmentally responsible paint management programs. Oversight is provided by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), with Director James Jennings highlighting its impact on conserving resources and promoting recycling practices.
State Senator Linda Holmes praised the program for increasing accessibility and offering Illinois residents and businesses a safe, eco-friendly solution for leftover paint disposal.
