SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Veolia Hazardous Waste, North America has been honored with the distinguished Recycling Excellence Award by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), celebrating the company’s outstanding efforts in advancing environmental sustainability across the state.
The accolade recognizes Veolia’s groundbreaking propane tank and gas cylinder recycling program, which has been transforming the way both residential consumers and commercial operations safely dispose of end-of-life cylinders. The initiative, led from the company’s Menomonee Falls facility, focuses on the safe storage, processing, and treatment of hazardous waste materials before they are moved to certified disposal sites.

A key component of the award is the company’s development of a dedicated gas cylinder recycling unit, designed in collaboration with leading industry specialists. This innovative system allows for the complete recovery and reuse of remaining propane, while the emptied tanks are compressed and recycled as scrap metal—ensuring that no material is wasted. The approach is both environmentally responsible and financially efficient, helping to reduce landfill volumes and improve resource recovery.
In its announcement, the Wisconsin DNR noted that the program delivers dual benefits: boosting sustainability and improving operational efficiency for individuals and businesses dealing with hazardous materials. The initiative is also seen as a model for safe recycling practices in the waste management sector.
Paul Bittner, Facility Manager at Menomonee Falls, credited the success of the project to Brent Dierks, Reactives Program Manager for the Central Branch. Bittner highlighted Dierks’ leadership and expertise as instrumental in driving the program from concept to implementation.
The award underscores Wisconsin’s commitment to promoting innovative recycling solutions and reinforces Veolia’s position as a leader in responsible resource recovery and hazardous waste management.
