SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Haverhill city has received $31,500 in state grant for its recycling programs. The grant money will be utilized towards expanding the city’s recycling program, by adding more items to the acceptable list of materials at its recycling centre.
The funding is part of the $5.2 million distributed across the state under the Sustainable Materials Recovery Program (SMRP) Municipal Grant program from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The city had received a total of nine points in seven qualifying categories.
The money will be used to maintain the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHARM). Also, the city plans to create bilingual (English/Spanish) door hangers that provide information on bulk item pickups as well as recycling guidelines. The door hangers will be left at a residence by Capitol Waste whenever items left at the curb fail to meet bulk item pickup guidelines.
The recycling center will use the grant money to purchase a new recycling compactor to replace the current one, which has already reached the end of its useful life. In addition, the city plans to purchase security cameras to prevent acts of illegal dumping.
