SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Colorado announced expansion of its producer-funded recycling program. Accordingly, it will bring no-cost recycling services to more communities under the state’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program for packaging and paper.
Circular Action Alliance Colorado (CAA Colorado), the state-designated Producer Responsibility Organization, has signed funding agreements covering Cortez, Dolores and Oak Creek. Other communities, including Golden and Thornton communities are also gearing up to participate in the program, which would further increase access to producer-funded curbside collection.
In order to build a broader recycling network, the program has already entered into service agreements with Apex Waste Solutions, Boulder County, Bruin Waste, Clean Valley Recycling and Ranch Creek Waste. Also, CAA Colorado is reportedly holdings discussions with larger operators including Republic Services, Waste Connections of Colorado and Waste Management.
The effort are aimed at effective implementation of Colorado’s Producer Responsibility Program for Statewide Recycling Act, HB22-1355. The legislation moves the financial burden for recycling covered packaging and paper products from local governments and taxpayers to producers.
CAA Colorado says the move will help expand collection, improve sorting and processing capacity, and strengthen recycling markets across the state.
