MONTREAL (RecyclingMonster): Greenwood County, South Carolina, and Redtail Renewables are moving ahead with plans to develop a renewable natural gas (RNG) project at the Greenwood County Landfill.
The partnership follows Redtail Renewables' acquisition of VRNG Greenwood LLC, the company previously developing the facility. The transaction closed in late July, with Redtail assuming responsibility for investment in and operation of the landfill's gas collection system under long-term agreements with the county.
Landfill Gas to Be Upgraded Into Pipeline-Quality RNG
The project will capture landfill gas generated by decomposing waste and process it into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas.
Greenwood County and Redtail said the resulting RNG is intended for use as a lower-carbon transportation fuel.
Facility Designed for 300,000 MMBtu of Annual RNG Production
Once fully developed, the facility is designed to process approximately 1,250 standard cubic feet of landfill gas per minute and produce about 300,000 MMBtu of RNG per year.
According to the project announcement, the anticipated emissions impact is comparable to removing the carbon dioxide emissions associated with nearly 2,000 passenger vehicles from the road each year.
County Agreement Sets 2028 Project Completion Deadline
Greenwood County's amended landfill-gas agreements provide for a project determination phase through March 2027.
Under the amended timeline, project construction is required to begin by the end of 2027 and be completed by the end of 2028.
