SEATTLE (Recycling Monster):Mason City has introduced a new automated waste collection system for residential customers. It replaces traditional garbage cans and recycling bins with standardized rolling carts, delivering safer and more efficient pickup.
The sanitation crews will use collection trucks equipped with mechanical lifting arms that empty carts automatically. This will allow drivers to remain inside the vehicle throughout the collection process. City officials say the upgraded system will improve operational efficiency while reducing the risk of workplace injuries,.

Under the new program, every household must use the city-issued carts for regular garbage and recycling service. The black-lid cart must be used for household waste, while the yellow-lid cart will be for recyclable materials. Residents are not required to separate recyclable items before placing them in the recycling cart.
To ensure successful collection, carts should be placed at the curb before 6:00 a.m. on collection day, with the lid arrows facing the street. City officials noted that it is advisable to keep the carts outside the previous evening. Also, residents are reminded to keep cart lids fully closed and avoid overfilling them. Meanwhile, there will be no change in procedure for yard waste collection.
The new measures are expected to improve the quality of recyclable materials, City officials noted.
