According to the county’s statement, a Notice of Intent to Award for Curbside Trash and Recycling Services has been issued to BFI Waste Management Services LLC, operating as Republic Services of Yorktown. The company, which has provided curbside trash collection in York County for nearly 30 years, was selected through a competitive procurement process and comprehensive evaluation of multiple proposals.
The decision comes after the Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority (VPSSA) voted to terminate York County’s previous recycling contract with Tidewater Fibre Corporation, effective September 30, 2025. Following the termination, the county assured residents that it was actively pursuing new solutions to maintain recycling services. As an interim measure, several convenience centers were designated for residents to drop off recyclable materials.
County officials stated that the upcoming partnership with Republic Services represents a significant step toward restoring reliable, countywide recycling and improving waste diversion efforts. Details on collection schedules and program guidelines are expected to be released in the coming months.
