Waste Connections, Republic Services Landfills Cited for Violations

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Several major U.S. landfill operators, including Waste Connections and Republic Services, have recently come under scrutiny after receiving permit violation notices from regulatory authorities.

In Bushnell, Florida, the city has given Waste Connections until December 10, 2025, to resolve odor issues cited at its Heart of Florida Landfill. Officials have warned that failure to comply could result in the revocation of the landfill’s construction and operating permit. The facility reportedly handles around 7,500 tons of waste daily. However, Waste Connections stated that it has not received any formal warning or violation notice from state authorities regarding odor complaints.

Meanwhile, Republic Services’ Middle Point Landfill in Tennessee—the state’s largest solid waste facility—received a notice of violation from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) last month. The notice was issued after leachate was found entering the landfill’s runoff system. The site currently processes approximately 3,700 tons of waste per day.

Republic Services has also been pursuing a landfill expansion plan, which has faced regulatory and community opposition. The company has yet to respond to media inquiries regarding the alleged violations or the status of the proposed expansion.
