Detroit, MI Ramped Up Recycling Efforts with New Bins

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Detroit Department of Public Works announced major expansion to its recycling program. It has placed dozens of new recycling bins at bus stops throughout the city. Also, the Department added two electric heavy-duty vehicles to its fleet.

A total of 42 new blue recycling bins have been placed at bus stops across all seven districts. Out of the two newly launched electric trucks, one will be used to collect recycling from these bus stops. The second truck, meanwhile, will collect recyclables from small apartments, restaurants and businesses.

The “On-the-Go” Bus Stop recycling containers will accept a wide range of materials including metal, plastic, glass and paper cups/cartons. However, residents are advised not to put items such as lids and straws, plastic bags, paper bags with trash/fast food wrappers inside them, Styrofoam take-out containers and cups, receipts and chip bags.

The trucks were funded by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy and DTE Energy. Detroit DPW has already secured $500,000 towards installing approximately 800 additional recycling cans within one year.

The City DPW aims to expand the program so as to have blue bins at every bus stop throughout the city.
