SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): A landfill, opened with the sole purpose of providing a regional solution to waste disposal, has completed 50 years of operation.
The Yolo County, CA landfill had opened its doors on July 14, 1975. Since then, the County has been making significant investments in innovative infrastructure, giving prime importance to recycling as well as composting. The various initiatives by the County administration have helped it contribute significantly to its waste reduction efforts. The landfill still has an estimated 99 years of capacity left.

An event to celebrate five decades of operation is planned to be held on July 19th, which will be attended among others by representatives from partnering haulers WM and Recology. It must be noted that the landfill has been partnering with WM in the cities of West Sacramento, Winters, Woodland and unincorporated Yolo County and with Recology in Davis during the past five decades.
The authorities reiterated their commitment to make it one of the best landfills, not only in California, but in the entire nation. Furthermore, they expressed their commitment to turn the landfill into a regional hub for sustainability. It must be noted that a new gas to energy facility is being planned at the landfill in order to aid enhanced methane capture and increased energy production.
